If you are considering an assessment for an adult or a youth over the age of 19, there are a few things to think about before we get started.…
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessments for adults need to be done, of course, in a competent manner, but can be done informally by most psychiatrists and psychologists. However, if you are wanting to determine eligibility for supports, then the formal process used for youths may be more appropriate.
I do not specialize in adult assessments. I will, however, consider seeing young adults up to the age of 25 if you have an adult (such as a parent) who is able to speak to your early development (i.e., they know you from infancy on and continuously throughout your life).
If you are over the age of 25, I would recommend checking the BCPA referral service or contacting SpectrumWorks Consulting in Vancouver. I am not aware of any clinicians in Victoria seeing adults for autism assessments.
You should be aware that support for adults with autism is limited to those adults with very significant functional limitations in their everyday abilities. That is, to be eligible for support, young adults need to show very significant difficulties navigating the world. You do not necessarily need an autism assessment if you are simply wondering if you have autism. You can research autism and talk to friends and family about their impressions. You only need an assessment if you are seeking support and accommodations that require a diagnosis (e.g., assistance in your workplace or with disability services).
An ASD assessment costs $2950. This includes the use of the ADOS and ADI-R and an appropriate assessment of developmental level.
Autism is a rare and pervasive developmental disorder. Symptoms of autism are apparent early in life, though in some situations, they are not recognized as autism until later in life.
